Media needs to play its role in protecting the identities of rape victims.
LAHORE: This is in reference to the editorial “Raping a child” (September 15). I want to point out that while it is important that the perpetrators of this heinous crime be brought to book, it is equally important to protect the identities of the victims. The name of the child victim is all over the media, some reporters even went to her home and had the audacity to interview her parents. Being on all the news channels may make ever having a normal life in this country even more difficult for the child for she may have to live with this stigma forever. In India, disclosing the identity or name of the rape victim is strictly forbidden and the same practice needs to be followed in the land of pure. Moreover, the media also needs to play its role in protecting the identities of rape victims.
