Discussing Ayub’s decision

Letter September 11, 2013
Education helps the economy to a lesser extent than a good economy benefits the education sector of the country.

LAHORE: This is apropos the article “Middle class youth’s aspirations” (September 10) by Shahid Javed Burki. With due respect, I do not agree with the writer where he seems to disagree with former president Ayub Khan’s decision to ask the Americans for assistance to improve the process of economic planning in the country instead of asking them to set up world class educational institutes. I think he was right. Education helps the economy to a lesser extent than a good economy benefits the education sector of the country.

Producing an educated youth without creating corresponding economic opportunities in developing countries like Pakistan (where the basic aim of education is to help get a good job) will only produce a frustrated youth. Such youth may revolt against the government, resulting in anarchy.
