Operation in Karachi

Letter August 31, 2013
Powers should be given to the army and it should be called in for a limited period to carry out a targeted operation.

ISLAMABAD: The turmoil in Karachi has created an alarming situation for the whole of Pakistan, especially since the city is the country’s nerve centre economically and commercially. Recently, the MQM made a demand that the military be called in Karachi to handle the city’s rapidly deteriorating law and order situation. Initially, this idea was rejected by other political parties but then some political parties seemed to have given their approval for a targeted operation against criminals.

What is the way out of the mess that Karachi currently finds itself in? How can this situation be controlled when, on one hand, we have a police force that is heavily politicised and quite inefficient, and on the other, we have political parties which are divided on how to meet such an important challenge. The answer is very simple: powers should be given to the army and it should be called in for a limited period to carry out a targeted operation. We have to be united on this front in order to defeat criminals and extortionists in our midst so that our country’s largest city can be rid of this scourge once and for all.
