What constitutes a luxury?

Letter August 28, 2013
Houses in localities such as Model Town, Lahore, are 40 to 50 years or more old.

LAHORE: Mohammad A Qayyum’s article “Tax on a man’s castle” (August 26) correctly points out that the Punjab government has an odd idea of what constitutes a ‘luxury’. Houses in localities such as Model Town, Lahore, are 40 to 50 years or more old. Considering their present state and the financial position of the hapless owners who inherited them, taxing them as luxury houses seems unjust and confiscatory in nature. A one-kanal house in DHA is definitely more luxurious. I hope better sense prevails and this tax is abolished.
