Putting Kashmir on the back burner

Letter August 27, 2013
It is high time Pakistan put the Kashmir issue on the back burner and paid attention to more pressing domestic issues.

ATLANTA: This is with reference to Tariq Mahmud’s article “Why India should show restraint” (August 27). I fully agree with the writer where he says that the Pakistani leadership has moved away from the country’s longstanding position on the Kashmir issue. In my opinion, this is a very wise and timely decision from the country’s political leadership. Skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC) or elsewhere are not the solution and only serve to waste lives and resources of both countries.

The ongoing LoC brawls have frustrated the whole subcontinent. It is high time Pakistan put the Kashmir issue on the back burner and paid attention to more pressing domestic issues. Kashmir is not a problem of the common man but has been kept alive by a strong lobby, whose existence depends on keeping this issue alive. It is its bread and butter; for this lobby, the resolution of the Kashmir issue will disintegrate its interests and its high status will vanish into thin air.
