Tax on a man’s castle

Letter August 26, 2013
I don’t understand the logic behind the Punjab government’s one-time tax on housing in some areas.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Mohammad A Qayyum’s article “Tax on a man’s castle” (August 26). I don’t understand the logic behind the Punjab government’s one-time tax on housing in some areas. An uncle of mine, who is in his nineties, bought a four-kanal house sometime in the 1960s. Now, he is near broke and although he lives in that house, he cannot sell as its ownership is being contested by his children and family. The point is that what you see is not necessarily the true picture. Our system of taxation is absurd and becoming more so every day, with short-term thinking being displayed by each regime that comes to power.
