CHICAGO: With each passing day, the prospects of peace are receding, not improving. Peace was a given as long as the Indian armed forces were under the civilian yoke and were restrained from any act of aggression. With the recent incidents, the Indian armed forces deployed at the Line of Control have been given operational independence to act as they deem fit. Naturally, the cost of infiltration will be raised substantially to make that business unprofitable. The Indian political leadership no longer wants to be seen as responsible in any way for loss of lives and the electoral losses it can bring.
In Pakistan, the going is tougher due to lack of unanimity or unity on the part of institutions, on the way forward. The prospects for events running out of control are dangerously high.
