Al Ghazali and Greek rationalism

Letter August 07, 2013
Apart from political ramification of his work, Al Ghazali also destroyed Greek rationalism as philosophical discourse.

RAWALPINDI: This is apropos of Amber Darr’s article “Reading Al Ghazali in London” (August 7). I find it sad that Al Ghazali’s take on Greek rationalism closed the door on rational thought. Apart from the political ramifications of his work, Al Ghazali also destroyed Greek rationalism as a philosophical discourse. His works have been read, reread and critiqued countless times by Western philosophers, who mostly end up agreeing with Al Ghazali.

Even today, a new philosophical discourse is taking shape in the West, which is exploring the flaws in Greek rationalism based on Al Ghazali’s works. Karl Popper and Nassim Nicholas Taleb were the philosophers who explored his ideas most recently.
