RAWALPINDI: A news report in almost all newspapers of the country on July 31 has created panic in the minds of many people, especially residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
It said that 67 of 86 water filtration plants that supply drinking water to the cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are supplying water that is not fit for human consumption. The report was further authenticated by referencing it to experts of the laboratory operated by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR). The report further added that unsafe drinking water was being used by residents of most of the residential sectors of Islamabad. However, the more affluent sections of society do not have any issue with this since they can purchase mineral water.
The areas of Rawalpindi which were mentioned in the report are Dhok Kala Khan, Dhok Paracha, Dhok Kashmirian, Sadiqabad, 6th Road, Banni Chawk, various blocks of Satellite Town, Dhok Ratta, Mohanpura, Dariyabad, Gawalmandi, Rawal Chowk, Rahimabad, Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, Bagh Sardaran and Saidpur Road. It is very strange that elected representatives of both the cities have not taken any action in this regard. Rawalpindi has representation from Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf as well as Sheikh Rasheed and the ruling PML-N. We would request the cities’ elected representatives to pay full attention to the concerns of their constituents, especially to this issue of the supply of unsafe drinking water.
