Since over half the country’s population is in Punjab, by default, it dominates Pakistan one way or the other.
KARACHI: This is with reference to S Akbar Zaidi’s article of August 2 titled, “Should Punjab carry Pakistan’s burden?” It is true that since over half the country’s population is in Punjab, by default, the province dominates Pakistan one way or the other. Punjab is Pakistan’s breadbasket, so to speak, and many other food items are grown there as well apart from wheat. Currently, there is load-shedding of gas and electricity in Punjab unlike in Karachi.
The simple logic is that we are living in a democratic country and that means that whichever part of the country or region has more people may tend to dominate. This logic applies on the National Finance Commission Award as well and we should accept it because this is the logic of democracy.
The only solution to all of this lies in increasing the number of provinces.
