Drug addiction

Letter July 27, 2013
We need to invest our intellect, social resources, other resources in nurturing youth, protect against drug addiction.

ISLAMABAD: Indeed, young people are considered a precious asset and the future human capital for any nation but not in my home province, Sindh, where one can witness flocks of drug addicts of all age groups — in particular, the young people. The increase of drug abuse and the rise in threat of HIV/AIDS amongst young people in the districts of upper Sindh is a cause for concern.

In this doomsday scenario where the young segment of society is being destroyed, we need to invest our intellect, social resources and a range of other resources in nurturing the youth and protecting them against the drug addiction. It is a painful reality that the family, as an institution, is breaking down; but even it has to seriously re-examine its role and responsibility as a socialising and nurturing agent.

The civil society should also come forward with effective delivery mechanisms that are collaborative, multifaceted, preventive and remedial in character.

Above all, our young people from different parts of the country should play a very visible and important role in addressing and responding to needs of young people in the hopes of one day making Pakistan a drug addiction free country.
