A military coup?

Letter October 04, 2010
I would like to say that for the first time, I do not agree with the views of Musharraf.

LAHORE: This is with reference to the article “Musharraf warns of new military coup in Pakistan" (September 30). I would like to say that for the first time, I do not agree with the views of Musharraf.

We do not want Pakistan to become a police state which is controlled by the army. Why do we need the army for keeping checks and balances? Why cannot we develop our civil society and political institutions without the involvement of the forces? I agree that the present government has failed to deliver but allowing the army to take over our institutions is certainly not the solution. We have tried several military regimes in the past and unfortunately they haven’t worked very well. I would support Musharraf if he comes back as a civilian and contests the election in a proper democratic way. However, if he is planning to use the army to come to power and increase its role in the political circle, then he certainly does not have my vote!
