Deficient coverage

Letter July 19, 2013
Is it mere incompetence on the part of our media or an unhealthy obsession with local and national level news?

KARACHI: It is interesting to note that Pakistan’s electronic media is practically silent on the defining change that some Muslim countries in our region and beyond are going through, especially, the intriguing story developing in Bangladesh over the last few months has been completely ignored. That country has taken a sharp turn towards secularism — with death sentences handed out to senior Jamaat-e-Islami leaders over alleged war crimes in 1971.

The electronic media is equally and unbelievably deficient in its coverage of very meaningful events taking place in Turkey, Syria and Egypt. Is it mere incompetence on the part of our media or an unhealthy obsession with local and national level news? I hope our electronic media finds the right balance between local — and so far — completely absent international coverage because surely, Pakistanis without the ability or the willingness to read newspapers could use some enlightenment and broader perspectives. This makes for a more intelligent and pluralistic society.
