The need for NADRA to stay relevant

Letter July 17, 2013
To sustain NADRA’s growth and success, a visionary, vibrant, enthusiastic and energetic leadership is needed.

FAIRFIELD, OH, US: This is with reference to Tariq Malik’s article “The need for NADRA to stay relevant” (Juy 13). In this constantly evolving world, the only constant is change. Pakistan is a country where most of the good done by one government is undone by its successors, who try to reinvent the wheel by bringing their own version of change. NADRA has withstood this wind quite brilliantly. It has remained relevant and provided value-added services to the public and to government agencies. Ironically, many of us treat NADRA as only a department that makes identity cards and overlook other valuable services it provides, like streamlining the Zakat distribution process, the Benazir Income Support Programme, the distribution of emergency funds in case of disaster, identity verification, etc. NADRA’s role, though limited during the past election, also deserves to be appreciated. This is just the beginning of NADRA’s wonderful future. It has many opportunities before it, like tracking money laundering, integrating the NIC and and passport systems, unifying the tax collection process with the FBR and integrating the NIC system with immigration authorities to weed out illegal immigrants, who contribute towards arms and drug trafficking.

To sustain NADRA’s growth and success, a visionary, vibrant, enthusiastic and energetic leadership is needed. Mr Malik, its chairman, has constantly led from the front and provided invaluable services to the country. I wish NADRA and its management the best of luck in future challenges and endeavours.

S Sami
