Conflict of interest

Letter July 14, 2013
The person appointed as adviser to the prime minister on Civil Aviation cannot be expected to fix PIA.

KARACHI: The government has formed a new Civil Aviation Ministry, which has jurisdiction over PIA and the Civil Aviation Authority.  The person appointed as adviser to the prime minister on Civil Aviation, and who happens to be the defacto minister of the newly-created ministry, is himself the owner of a company that provides ground handling services to several PIA competitors, such as Qatar Airways, Saudi Airlines, Etihad Airways and Fly Dubai. How can, in all fairness, the gentleman be expected to fix PIA since isn’t there a clear conflict of interest?

I would appeal to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo-motu notice of this appointment which seems to be in direct conflict with the well-being of our national flag carrier.
