I personally was chastised for not being “Islamic” enough at that time. General Zia castigated me himself.
ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Saroop Ijaz’s article “This is not a Test” (July 7). The article makes for compelling reading and needs to be read by all who matter. Mr Ijaz has brought out all the arguments in favour of decisive and simultaneous action against the Laskhar-e-Jhangvi (and I may say other extremist militant outfits, too) in Balochistan, as well as in Punjab, in a strong and cogent manner.
Mr Ijaz’s mention of the psychopath General Ziaul Haq’s fostering of bigotry and hatred is very relevant. I personally was chastised for not being “Islamic” enough at that time. General Zia castigated me himself when I was the second-in-command at our embassy in Jeddah in the early 1980s.
The present government must now absolutely take the bull by the horns and stop dilly dallying on the matter of dealing with militancy.
