ISLAMABAD: Senior citizens in the pensioners’ category are queuing these days in scorching heat in front of the office of the Accountant General Pakistan Revenues (AGPR) and waiting for the settlement of their Supreme Court-mandated increase in pensions. To add salt to injury, they are told that additional staff is not available to compute their benefits.
By the time additional staff is made available for the job, many ailing beneficiaries would have passed away. This means that the AGPR probably knows the final solution of the problem. Only death, after all, can resolve the difficulties of earthly existence. Only death can liberate humanity from perpetual misery and helplessness.
The pensioners, however, continue to hope that the AGPR will find the extra time and staff to settle their claims. At least, hope should not be allowed to die because living in a state of hopelessness is worse than death.
