Viable anti-terrorism policy

Letter July 09, 2013
This type of random, senseless terrorism is only perpetrated to foment anxiety and insecurity among common people.

DHAHRAN, SAUDI ARABIA: On the evening of July 6, a powerful blast ripped through the old part of the city of Lahore, where people were enjoying their weekend. It is paradoxical to note that the blast occurred in a high security zone.

This type of random, senseless terrorism is only perpetrated to foment anxiety and insecurity among common people everywhere. The executers or perpetrators did their ugly job as if they did not have a heart at all but more than that what could be the possible motive of the planners and organisers of this act? Incidents of terrorism, coupled with other factors, including the energy crisis, have ruined Pakistan’s economy. Lawlessness, especially in Karachi, known to be the economic and industrial hub of the country, has inflicted harm on economic activity. On the human front, due to the prevailing circumstances in Karachi and other parts of the country, there are reports of a rise in mental diseases.

The Nawaz Sharif government is convening an All Parties Conference on July 12, where the issue of grappling with terrorism and the law and order problem is expected to be a major subject for deliberations. We expect that a coherent and viable national policy on the matter will emerge that will take us in the right direction to possibly counter what is the prevailing order of the day right now.
