The menace of terrorism

Letter July 04, 2013
We have no idea if any government functionary tried to assure these girls of support or security.

DHAHRAN, SAUDI ARABIA: Quetta and Peshawar were rocked by powerful blasts on June 30 leaving over 46 people dead. The Quetta blast targeted the Hazara Shia community. The Peshawar attack was directed against an FC convoy. This senseless bloodshed is as intriguing as it is sad and condemnable.

After every gory incident of terrorism, there is an avalanche of perfunctory condemnations until another incident that follows it almost immediately. Unfortunately, there seems to be no coordinated endeavour to fight this terrible menace, which is eating into the foundations of our country. There are a number of intelligence and law-enforcement agencies, which all appear to work in their isolated ruts, without any visible coordination and cooperation. For example, in the case of the Quetta blast, it still remains to be ascertained how the attackers penetrated through a chain of different security checkpoints to reach their target point in the presence of intelligence sleuths all over the area.

In addition, unfortunately, we have become part of a society where money can solicit anything, from mundane to extraordinary feats of crime by the mighty without being apprehended. Another sad bit of news is the recent exodus of some victims of extremist crimes, from various parts of Pakistan to Western countries. Rimsha Masih’s move to Canada and Malala Yousufzai’s to the UK are examples. We have no idea if any government functionary tried to assure these girls of support or security.
