Cleanliness in a public hospital

Letter July 04, 2013
The overall cleanliness of the parts of the Bahawal Victoria Hospital that I visited was pathetic.

BAHAWALPUR: On a recent visit to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital, I was shocked to see cats roaming in the wards of critically ill patients. The overall cleanliness of the parts of the hospital that I visited was pathetic. More shocking was the number of attendants with each patient. There was absolutely no regard for the presence of female patients in the female ward, with there being five or six male attendants with each patient at times, making the task of the staff on duty very difficult. On inquiry, a few doctors said that they cannot dare ask the attendants to leave and demanded security to ensure minimal attendants are allowed inside the wards.

It was also observed that just before the visit of a senior doctor, janitors would do some work and attendants were asked to leave but as soon as the doctor left, the previous state was quickly achieved.

I request the authorities concerned to kindly look into the issues identified. Only a bit of efficiency on part of the hospital’s medical superintendant or a higher figure of authority would change things for the better, at least, for the time being.
