LAHORE: South Punjab is taking its due share from the water stored at the Tarbela Dam through the CJ and TP link canals. The Sindh chief minister has erred in saying that the shortage of water in Sindh is because of the water being diverted through these two canals.
The factual position is that in addition to the Sindh representative, the federal representative is also from Sindh and since Balochistan gets its water from Sukkur Barrage in Sindh, the Balochistan representative openly votes with Sindh. This gives Sindh three votes against only one vote for Punjab. Despite this, IRSA is duty-bound to give south Punjab its legitimate share of water. The water stored at Tarbela is surplus floodwater on which south Punjab has as much right as Sindh. The chief minister should know that shortage of water is there because we have not built a dam in almost four decades.
