Computerisation of land records should start from urban centres, be replicated in rural areas.
KARACHI: This is with reference to Syed Moham-mad Ali’s article “Can computerisation alter our patwari culture?” (June 28). Computerisation of land records should start from the urban population and based on the experience in urban centres, should be replicated in the rural areas. It is currently being done the other way around.
It is because of the clarity of legal ownership, that the land prices of selected areas in a city like Karachi are extremely high, whereas land prices in some other areas are low. The same holds true for industrial areas as well.
At the same time, computerisation of land records in urban areas will discourage the land mafia from taking possession of land, houses and public places through their agents. More importantly, it will encourage people to make genuine investments in affordable houses and industries.
