Objectifying women

Letter June 22, 2013
How can you objectify women in such a disgusting manner?

KARACHI: I am a regular reader and visitor of your newspaper’s website and am generally very favourable towards it. But the other day, I saw something strange — it appeared as a segment called “Fashion Police” and it made for most unpleasant reading and viewing.

In my opinion, it was horrible because it was all about objectifying women. How can you objectify women in such a disgusting manner? Think about it. Do we have any moral ethics left in our lives and lifestyles?

Are we not going to be answerable to Allah SWT for all that we are doing? In Allah’s name, I ask all of us to pause and rethink. We need to learn to respect women for they are not for sale. They are someone’s daughter, sister, mother or wife. They have equal rights as human beings. Why are we exploiting them in the name of fashion? May Allah help us see the light!

P.S.: I know you must be thinking that I am another mullah/Taliban, etc. But believe me, I am neither. I am a very liberal person at heart. I also believe it is my right to complain. My job was to share my opinion and disgust I felt based in light of the Supreme teachings of Islam.
