Modi becoming prime minister of India is wishful thinking.
KINGSTON, JAMAICA: This is with reference to Shivam Vij’s article “Why I want Narendra Modi to be prime minister” (June 14). Modi becoming prime minister of India is wishful thinking. Indians are not fools. The BJP wrote its death a few years back by chanting the “Shining India” mantra. Now, they will lose a winnable battle by chanting the “Go Modi” mantra.
The BJP does not have the common sense to see that India has a federal polity and that Modi will need allies to succeed. Modi is not Atal Behari Vajpayee, who attracted conflicting allies because of his personality. This is not Gujarat or any other state, where local level politics can be dominated by employing a few strategies. India is vast and complex. Modi’s so-called development mantra will not take him too far. I am just sad that the BJP’s reliance on Modi will result in Indians having to put up with another five years of the corrupt UPA government.
