Half steps on Guantanamo

Letter June 15, 2013
Let’s fix our own filthy rotten backyard first before we start lecturing America about Guantanamo Bay.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: This is with reference to Waris Husain’s article of June 14 titled “Half steps on Guantanamo”. In Pakistan, there must be many jails full of those inmates who have been imprisoned for years, either without even being charged or whose court cases are still pending. There will also be many prisoners who have completed their jail terms but have yet to be released because of red tape and so on.

Let me also assure the writer that each and every inmate in Guantanamo Bay is fed, clothed and watched closely. They get fresh food and shelter, blankets and medical supervision (things which are luxuries in most Pakistani jails).

Let’s fix our own filthy rotten backyard first before we start lecturing America about Guantanamo Bay.
