Getting our priorities right

Letter June 12, 2013
All the government’s efforts and synergies should be diverted towards resolving the energy crisis.

ISLAMABAD: With reference to Parvez Iftikhar’s article “Proposals for the new government” (June 11), I respect the writer’s proposals on the information technology sector but the bitter fact is that Pakistan needs electricity on an urgent basis rather than his proposed 3G and 4G solutions. All the government’s efforts and synergies should be diverted towards resolving the energy crisis rather than towards areas which should not be our priority at the moment.

Furthermore, the writer’s proposal of laying down fibre optics and broadband connections at the tehsil level will be of little use on account of the high cost of installation and maintenance. If we view the situation from the point of view of those living in those tehsils, then at the maximum, they can use broadband to only stream movies or perhaps, to use Facebook. Broadband connections, at the moment, will unfortunately achieve nothing more for the people at this point in time.
