The current situation in Pakistan calls for a very serious exercise in self-evaluation.
NEW YORK: This is apropos the article “Learning from secular Istanbul” (June 3). The Objectives Resolution of 1949, the failure to nip the Bonapartist tendencies of certain of our rulers, the pandering to the right wing with the Second Amendment to the 1973 Constitution, the mauling of the Constitution by General Ziaul Haq in the name of religion, the foolishness of General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s actions in almost a decade-long rule are just a few of the self-inflicted wounds that have destroyed the soul and body of Pakistan.
The Turks, too, have had military rule but their ability to identify and cure the root causes behind it have put them on the road to democracy and prosperity despite certain problems that they may be facing currently. Yes, there are some lessons to be learnt from that great nation. But the current situation in Pakistan calls for a very serious exercise in self-evaluation if the country is to avoid falling off the cliff.
