Decentralising education

Letter June 03, 2013
It will be a prudent step if education department is decentralised and locals are allowed to run the education system.

TOPEKA, KANSAS, USA: This is with reference to Muhammad Hamid Zaman’s article “K-P’s education test” (June 2). I am not too familiar with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s education policy or manifesto but it will be a prudent step if the education department is decentralised and the locals are allowed to run the education system in their respective communities like they do in the US, where education boards are elected locally for two years and are responsible for running the school districts. Taxes are levied at local communities to finance education and some financial help is taken from the state and federal governments.

If the local school board is not performing up to the required standard, then they should be replaced after two years by those who can and are up to the job. I sincerely believe that things will get better if people in responsible positions are made accountable for all their actions. I am originally from Mardan and hope that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s education sector will soon be on a par with that of Punjab and produce high quality educational institutions.
