Raising the fees in this exorbitant manner prevents access to education.
LAHORE: As an Old Sadiqian belonging to Sadiq Public School, Bahawalpur, I have read with concern reports that the school administration wants to raise fees in the school by 140 per cent on the advice of our previous governor. Such an act will simply prevent access to education for a large number of students. Granted the erstwhile Nawab of Bahawalpur established the school along the lines of his alma mater, Aitchison Chiefs College, in 1954, but times have changed since then.
The recently passed Article 25-A of the Constitution makes education a right of every child in the country and raising the fees in this exorbitant manner prevents access to education and gives the image, wrongful in my eyes, that Sadiq Public School is the preserve of the rich only. I am glad that the Bahawalpur Bench of the Lahore High Court has taken notice of this and hope that justice and good sense will prevail.
