The road to peace

Letter May 31, 2013
Timing of drone attack suggests that forces that are anti-dialogue between Pakistan and TTP are really desperate.

ONTARIO: This is with reference to the story “Tehreek-e-Taliban withdraw dialogue offer to new government” (May 31). Waliur Rehman was a relatively sane voice in the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) since he was a proponent of talks with the Pakistani government and Hakimullah Mehsud’s animosity towards him is not a secret. The timing of this drone attack suggests that the forces that are anti-dialogue between Pakistan and the TTP are really desperate, since they see that dialogue is a possibility.

War does not resolve problems. We have learnt that from history, be it the IRA conflict, which eventually ended on the dialogue table or the Pakistani state’s underestimation of the situation in the erstwhile East Pakistan, which ended in our surrender. War only brings suffering. The road to dialogue will not be easy; there will be more obstacles on the way to peace, however, with determination, we can still achieve it.
