KARACHI: A look at a leading news channel’s 2 pm headline news aired on May 25 was as follows:
Top news: son-in-law of the head of Indian cricket board questioned on spot-fixing. Next news: Asad Rauf returns to Pakistan after performing umpiring duties in the Indian Premier League. Next: The Irish cricket team may be willing to play in Pakistan if their safety concerns are addressed. Finally: 17 schoolchildren were burnt to death in a gas explosion in a school van in Gujrat.
This clearly indicates that TV channels have an obscene obsession with cricket and gross disrespect for human life. But then, they need advertisements to make money and market commercial products — tasks not done best with news about dead children.
