We are not really a democracy

Letter May 26, 2013
As long as there are apologists for rigging, we can't really be a democracy.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Farrukh Khan Pitafi’s letter of May 25, “What really happened on May 11?” The question of rigging, which is being discussed in social media, is not about who won. It is about how the game was played.

No one is saying that the Pakistan Tenreek-e-Insaf would have won, but they may have lost some crucial seats in the National Assembly, which for a young political party is quite significant. By asking the citizenry to move on and accept the results is like saying it is okay to let some college students cheat because in the end, the ones who were going to pass with distinctions were going to do so anyway.

It is also not true to state that we are a democracy. As long as educated columnists act as apologists for rigging, because it didn’t affect the ultimate outcome, then we aren’t really a democracy.

I don’t understand how so many people are confusing the issue.
