MARDAN: I was quite shocked to read Nafisa Rizvi’s “Sorry kids, we got it wrong” in The Express Tribune of May 23. Some political players have rightly received a lot of criticism in recent days for suggesting voters who have voted for “the other party” are somehow “lesser” voters than those who have voted for “our party”. Ms Rizvi seems to be echoing exactly this view.
Our march towards a better tomorrow will require many small steps. And in my view, the recent elections, for all their many flaws, represented a potentially huge step in terms of what will hopefully be our journey towards better governance. But one of the biggest threats on this road is the fact that there are still those out there who would negate the democratic/electoral process, however imperfect, however flawed, because they think they know better.
Yes, of course, the elections may be flawed, but I have not yet heard anyone argue that they were flawed to the extent that there would have been a material change to the outcome. So, let us give the process and the system a chance.
