Economic ties with China

Letter May 23, 2013
Our trade with China runs into billions of dollars and that is something which is not worthless.

KARACHI: This is with reference to the story “View from McLeod Road: Why the Sino-Pak alliance is economically worthless” (May 23). Our trade with China runs into billions of dollars and that is something which is not worthless, contrary to what the story states. Even if the balance of trade is in favour of China, it still means that a lot of people are employed in Pakistan in businesses that import and sell Chinese goods. Pakistani consumers enjoy the benefits of consuming these goods. India-China trade is also in favour of China. Obviously, China is a manufacturing powerhouse and most countries have trade deficits with it. That does not mean that we regard economic ties with it as worthless.
