Focusing on the economy

Letter May 07, 2013
Due to prolonged corruption, lack of accountability, lawlessness, it will take a generation to purge the mindset.

PRESTON, UK: This is with reference to Shahid Javed Burki’s article “Top priority: the economy” (May 6). Unless you root out corruption and establish law and order, when courts can dispense timely justice in resolving disputes and when investors know that their life and property is safe, not a fake cent will come into Pakistan.

Because of prolonged corruption, lack of accountability and lawlessness, it will take at least a generation to purge the Pakistani mindset and bring it back to normality. Without that, the hopes expressed by Mr Burki over the trajectory that the Pakistani economy may take once the new government is in power will not come to fruition.
