Top priority: the economy (II)

Letter May 06, 2013
The writer actually expects to collect tax in this corrupt land. Well, good luck to him.

NEW YORK: What Mr Shahid Javed Burki has proposed in his article are very sound and sensible policies for any other country but not for Pakistan. What the writer has said is utopian and will not work here. It may be suitable for a country like Vietnam or Thailand but not for Pakistan.

Like most economists, the writer has chosen to ignore the huge cultural and political problems that the country faces. We may have “a large and very young population” but it is not very educated and is prone to extremism, which makes this portion of the population a huge liability.

The writer actually expects to collect tax in this corrupt land. Well, good luck to him.

What is needed is a change in the dogmatic medieval Pakistani mindset first. Then these policies may work.
