Garbage dump

Letter May 02, 2013
Construction of a new building has even stolen away room of the garbage container there.

KARACHI: I live in the Garden East locality of Patel Para, Karachi. There was a time when I used to look up and I could see the sky glittering with thousands of stars above my head. Now, the only thing I can spot are sky-high buildings. There is always a new building coming up in every other corner of the area. Recently, the construction of a new building has even stolen away the room of the garbage container that had been serving the locality for several years.

This has resulted in the garbage container now finding its new home in another street of the locality, which has created an immense amount of trouble for us and all residents of our neighbouring buildings. Every day, we have to walk over an ocean of filth to get to our destinations. We cannot even open windows in this hot, suffocating summer anymore because of the stink and the army of mosquitoes caused by piles of filth and garbage. I would like to bring this state of affairs to the attention of the authorities concerned and request them to take concerted action to solve this problem and restore our lives to normal.
