KARACHI: Recent events have shown an increase in the rate of reported rape cases in India. The airing of explicit material on the internet has become a debatable issue there and some people are even demanding that the actors who promote such materials and concepts should be thrown behind bars.
On the other hand, another view holds that such circumstances are a result of lack of awareness and education. Being a student of mass communications, I believe that the internet, being such a vast media, has a lower share of gatekeepers than it should have. The presence of too much information can be harmful as well. I believe that websites with explicit material should be banned but it is also important to educate the people. Without the presence of education, even the most valid information and knowledge can be misused. We are living in a new global era in which it is important to recognise and remember one’s identity, values and ethics.
