We may blame individuals like Sarkozy but the fact remains that this happens in a democracy.
LAHORE: Clearly, AA Sheikh does not agree with Zara Barlas’s analogy with Saudi Arabia in her article ‘Do as the French do’ (September 18). However, her love (if any) for all things French does not take away from the force of her argument.
It is a fact that in any given society the dominant culture and/or religion dictates the lives of the people. Simply put, the needs of the many outweigh the wants/desires of the few. Such is the nature of any democratic setup. We may blame individuals like Sarkozy but the fact remains that this happens in a democracy. For the writer to expect the majority of the French to live by Islamic standards is a laughable proposition.
