Earthquake safety measures

Letter April 19, 2013
After the disaster, it is important to check for injuries and attend to them if needed.

KHAIRPUR: After the huge earthquake that hit the country and other parts of the world resulting in many deaths and injuries, it is important that there is more awareness regarding safety measures that can be taken during earthquakes. A little knowledge and a few precautionary measures can enormously increase one’s chances of surviving an earthquake — or any other type of natural disaster. The key is to have preventive measures in place.

First, it is important to learn how to survive while the ground is in motion. Most earthquakes are over in seconds so knowing what to do instinctively is very important. As soon as one feels the earth shaking, he or she should take refuge under a strong desk or table. It is important to instantly move away from windows, large mirrors, hanging objects, heavy furniture and fireplaces. It is important that offices and homes always have emergency flashlights ready at hand, as well as first-aid kits.

After the disaster, it is important to check for injuries and attend to them if needed. Also, it is important to leave buildings until they have been inspected for safety by a professional. If a gas leak is suspected, everyone must be evacuated and all windows and doors must be opened. As a precautionary measure, all electrical appliances should be turned off because even a tiny spark could ignite the gas. If the power is out, then major appliances should be turned off to prevent possible damage when the power is turned back on. If one sees any sparks, frayed wires, or smells hot insulation, the electricity should be turned off at the main fuse box.
