Unfair criticism

Letter March 25, 2013
Mohsin Khan keeps trying to take credit for the Test series sweep that Pakistan achieved against England in 2012.

KARACHI: It is quite amusing to see the former coach of the Pakistan cricket team, Mohsin Khan, find each and every opportunity to come up with a way to criticise the current coach, Dav Whatmore. Even when Pakistan win a game, Mohsin tries to give all the credit to the players and still finds a way to criticise Whatmore. When we lose a game, Mohsin then defends the players and again criticises Whatmore, claiming that there was “no plan” and the coach was not doing anything. Mohsin Khan should understand that the coach makes the plans but it is the players who actually need to go out and execute them. If they don’t execute them, that is not the coach’s fault. Secondly, Mohsin Khan keeps trying to take credit for the Test series sweep that Pakistan achieved against England in 2012. Apparently, Mohsin thinks that when he was the coach, he was responsible for all the victories and wants all the credit. Yet, he forgets about the defeats we suffered in the One-Day International series against England. He should keep things in perspective and stop being bitter about being sacked. Mohsin was made the coach as only a stop-gap arrangement.

I would encourage Mohsin not to lose the respect he has gained as a former player, to provide constructive and educated comments, and not to keep sounding like a bitter ex-player, who is still smarting from being sacked as a coach. It seems that each time we get a foreign coach, a lot of the ex-players in Pakistan look for ways to discredit that individual. It is time that our players grow up and understand the value of professionalism, which foreign coaches have gained through years of education and experience.
