Equating a full-face veil to robbers with a face mask on is naive.
LONDON: This is with reference to the article “Do as the French do” by Zara Barlas (September 18). I think the writer has misunderstood the issue at hand. Equating a full-face veil to robbers with a face mask on is naive. Robbers rob banks; a veil is a dress that some Muslim women wish to wear because of their religious values. Surely the writer should be able to tell the difference?
This ban will achieve nothing other than alienating a section of the population that already feels alienated. Surely a country like France should respect the right of men and of woman to choose the kind of attire that they would want to wear? What we are seeing, ironically, is that this country is going back it its medieval roots.
