No love for the mother tongue

Letter February 28, 2013
We prefer speaking in English and Urdu since it leaves a ‘better impression’ on others.

ISLAMABAD: After reading an article in The Express Tribune, I came to know that around 60 languages are spoken in Pakistan. It was interesting to know that 30 of these languages are spoken in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. In a country where so many languages are spoken, it is a pity that we were able to hold very few events on the International Mother Language Day, which is observed worldwide on February 21, to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

In an effort to follow developed countries, we are ignoring our own languages and culture. We prefer speaking in English and Urdu since it leaves a ‘better impression’ on others and find it embarrassing to converse in our native languages. We should stop killing our own rich culture and preserve our mother languages.
