The importance of standing united

Letter January 23, 2013
This is not the time to think of individual survival. It is time to stand united for survival of our entire nation.

KARACHI: Once a flood enters one’s city, it is not possible to protect one’s home with embankments. The flood has to be stopped outside the city limits to protect it from complete destruction.

In Pakistan today, the destruction caused by doctrinal differences has harmed us greatly and if we do not stand against it with unity, we shall all be victims, regardless of the individual efforts we carry out.

An average of 55 people are dying every week in Karachi alone. Every sect — be it Shia or Sunni — and every ethnicity is faced with insecurity. No one can claim that their life is more secure than the other. Everyone is trapped in the same whirlpool of vulnerability. The inevitability of death cannot be questioned but the manner in which it is being inflicted on our citizens has become unbearable and must be mourned. It is something that forces one to think about their future.

We must stand united because what we are witnessing is the decimation of humanity. It is not just a single sect or ethnicity that is being targeted; it is the entire nation.

Whoever is responsible for these gruesome and inhuman acts, is surely not from us. These elements are meant to create chaos and hatred amongst us.

This is not the time to think of individual survival. It is the time to stand united for the survival of our entire nation.
