A new film policy for the new year

Letter January 12, 2013
But the question is, how is our culture being defined and who is defining it in the said policy?

KARACHI: This is with reference to the news item “A new film policy for the New Year” (January 3). It is good to hear that the government has finally decided to do something positive regarding our film industry. According to the adviser to the ministry of national regulation and services, Iftikhar Durrani, “A new film policy is being formulated to promote Pakistani culture at national and international level.”

But the question is, how is our culture being defined and who is defining it in the said policy? How will our values be depicted in it? I hope that in a bid to promote a so-called soft image of Pakistan, the policy does not ask our filmmakers to start portraying things that are not in sync with our cultural values. I hope that the new film policy adheres to Pakistani values, redefines competition and our films start getting recognition for their uniqueness and originality.
