Electoral reforms

Letter January 06, 2013
It is essential and imperative to have honest and upright political leadership.

LAHORE: I wonder why many political observers see a conspiracy against democracy, because of Dr Tahirul Qadri’s somewhat sudden appearance on the scene and his demanding of electoral reforms and representation of all segments of society in parliament.

The army has been supporting democracy during the last five years but the pertinent question to ask is what has democracy delivered during that time? It is not a fault with democracy but is a failure of politicians who have not been able to deliver good governance. I think the army establishment also wants the end of a corrupt and exploitative electoral system since the prevailing one has failed to allow ordinary people to contest elections.

It is essential and imperative to have honest and upright political leadership so that those elected to public office can actually deliver good governance to their constituents.
