Land reform (II)

Letter September 11, 2010
We should bear in mind that in Pakistan only a small percentage of the population can afford to buy land or a house.

KARACHI: With regard to Pervez Tahir’s article on land reform, we should bear in mind that in Pakistan only a small percentage of the population can afford to buy land or a house. And that, is the real issue. Why does the ordinary Pakistani not have the purchasing power to purchase land? This inability in turn fuels social injustice, inequality and a sense of deprivation among people. And of course, it is linked closely to income distribution. Individuals should be limited to owning a small amount of land and the only way to do that would be to push for major land reform.
