LAHORE: Ordinary Pakistanis are reaping the ‘fruit’ of democracy in the form of inflation, massive power cuts, acute gas shortages, unemployment, terrorism and the deaths of hundreds of people due to fake drugs. It is imperative to have honest upright politicians who work towards the betterment of those who elected them and that they formulate and implement policies to further public good.
I think a referendum should be held prior to the next election. This should decide what changes need to be made in the electoral system so that certain minimum guidelines are set for those wishing to stand for public office. After all, what is the use of an election if it ends up bringing the same tainted and discredited politicians back to power?
I think Dr Tahirul Qadri has raised certain very valid issues for changing the present electoral system.
