LAHORE: Democracy entails the acceptance of the mandate of the winning party and playing the role of a responsible opposition. Benazir Bhutto never did that. Her behaviour when in power was even worse. She stopped the railways from giving any wagons for transporting scrap iron to the Ittefaq Foundries. She stopped the Karachi Port Trust from giving a berth to a US ship carrying scrap iron for the foundries. The ship stayed anchored off the port for over a year incurring exorbitant demurrage charges.
She stopped the nationalised banks from lending money to Nawaz Sharif. He was made to borrow from private banks at a very high mark-up forcing him into bank default.
With democratic friends like her, who needs an enemy?
