Beleaguered nation

Letter December 23, 2012
If a free and fair election is held, power is transferred smoothly, it will provide hope for this beleaguered country.

ISLAMABAD: Confrontation with the judiciary, disdain for the rule of law, disregard for morality, corruption, exploitation of religion for personal gain, contempt for merit and love for nepotism and a double standard when in fighting terrorism are some of the vices that characterise us as a nation.

Expecting the rest of the world to respect us when we don’t respect and tolerate one another, is expecting a bit too much. This is perhaps why the holding of a free and fair election in Pakistan is important. If that is done, and if power is transferred smoothly, that will provide some hope for this beleaguered country.
